How Much Control Do We Really Have Over Our Mood, Focus, Anxiety, and Stress?

More than you might think!

Much of our mental wellness comes down to lifestyle and nutrition—factors that can either pull us toward or push us away from positive states of mind. Let’s look at a few common symptoms and the nutritional or lifestyle factors that may be behind them. Number three is the most important.

  1. Fatigue, Fuzzy Thinking, or Headaches Between Meals?

These can be signs of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). One of the most effective strategies to prevent this is eating adequate protein with every meal. Most people should aim for 30–40g of protein per meal to maintain stable blood sugar and therefore reduce the risk of low mood, anxiety, and headaches that accompany dips in glucose.

  1. Dizziness or Lightheadedness?

These are potential signs of anemia, which means reduced oxygen delivery to the brain. To support healthy iron levels, it’s important to consume enough heme iron (found in animal sources), and the micronutrients required to make heme in the first place (which is needed to make hemoglobin).

  1. Lack of Motivation, Self-Destructive Thoughts, Quick to Anger?

These symptoms may be linked to dopamine dysregulation. Dopamine is like a bank account: if you’re constantly making withdrawals without making deposits (ie. partaking in highly rewarding activities that require minimal or no effort) you’re going to run dry. Furthermore, your body requires specific nutrients and conditions to make dopamine:

  • Oxygen – Remember section two? If you're anemic then dopamine synthesis is impaired

  • Vitamins B6 & B9 – Required for dopamine synthesis

  • Vitamin C & Copper – Required to convert dopamine to norepinephrine

  • Tyrosine  – The amino acid which gets converted into dopamine

  • Acetyl L Carnitine - Supports general dopamine function in the brain
