Can greens (or reds) supplements be contaminated with heavy metals—even if they're organic?

The risk of contamination in greens supplements is surprisingly high. This is largely due to the widespread use of fertilizers in North America which are used to grow the fruits & vegetables needed for greens supplements.

But doesn’t an organic certification prevent contamination?

First off, let’s make one thing clear - organic certified products contain fewer total toxins than non-organic ones. And similar to protein intake, total toxin intake is probably more important than exposure to individual substances.

Specifically, an organic certification dramatically reduces the presence of harmful substances like:
