Why Do Some Supplements Work Better Than Others?

The Second Question Every Consumer Should Ask
Last newsletter, we discussed the importance of therapeutic dosing - using enough of an ingredient to produce a meaningful health effect. This is the second major question every consumer should ask:
Can my body actually absorb and use it?
This is what bioavailability refers to.
Simply put, bioavailability is the proportion of a nutrient that successfully reaches your body and becomes available to have an active effect. Two supplements may contain the exact same nutrient on the label, yet one can be absorbed and utilized far more effectively than the other.
The Label Doesn't Tell the Whole Story
One of the biggest reasons is the chemical form of the ingredient.
Not all forms of a nutrient behave the same way once they enter your body. Some are more readily absorbed, some require additional metabolic or enzymatic conversion before they can be utilized, while others are simply less efficiently absorbed from the digestive tract altogether.
Higher-quality forms are often chosen because they are more readily absorbed, require fewer metabolic steps, or are more efficiently utilized by the body. The end result is that more of the nutrient becomes available to perform the job it was intended to do.
Think of It Like Airport Traffic
A highly bioavailable form is like getting dropped off when there's no traffic. You arrive quickly, efficiently, and with very few delays.
A poorly bioavailable form is like trying to reach the airport during rush hour. Every intersection adds another delay, traffic builds, progress slows, and sometimes you don't even make your flight.
Your body works in much the same way.
Every additional metabolic step creates another opportunity for the process to slow down or become less efficient. As a result, less of the original nutrient may ultimately become available for your body to use.
Same Nutrient. Different Results.
Magnesium provides a great example. Two products may both advertise "200 mg of magnesium," yet that doesn't necessarily mean they'll produce the same physiological effect. Magnesium glycinate is generally absorbed much more efficiently than magnesium oxide, which is one reason magnesium oxide is commonly used as a laxative rather than to optimize magnesium status.
Why This Matters for All-in-One Supplements
This is another challenge with many all-in-one supplements.
As we discussed last week, manufacturers have to balance the number of ingredients, serving size, taste, and price. One way to reduce costs is by lowering the dose. Another is by choosing less expensive forms of the ingredients. The label may still look impressive, but what ultimately matters is how much of those nutrients your body can actually absorb and use.
Getting Into Your Blood Isn't the Finish Line
There's one final concept that's often overlooked.
Bioavailability isn't just about getting a nutrient into your bloodstream.
For many nutrients, the real goal is getting them into your cells, where they influence energy production, metabolism, hormone synthesis, brain function, and thousands of other biochemical reactions. Reaching the bloodstream is an important milestone - but for many nutrients, it's only part of the journey. This, albeit more advanced concept, is another component of bioavailability.

The next time you're comparing two supplements, don't just ask:
"How much does it contain?"
Also ask:
"Is it in a form my body can actually absorb and use?"
